Synonym, the company helping turn lab breakthroughs into products on the shelves, is excited to launch Match powered by Capacitor.  As demand for bioproducts grows, companies need credible plans to scale manufacturing. It’s easy to feel lost wading through a production ecosystem that can be complex and opaque, and companies lose time and money trying to evaluate their options. Match powered by Capacitor® leverages the world’s most comprehensive fermentation capacity database with the Synonym team’s decades of experience in synthetic biology processes to provide customers a seamless experience identifying and partnering with their ideal contract manufacturing partner.

Why we built Match powered by Capacitor®

Synonym launched Capacitor.bio in 2022 to make it easier for companies to find the contract manufacturing organization (CMO) production resources they needed to bring bioproducts to market. At the same time, we had heard from many CMOs that finding qualified users for their capacity was a challenge. 

In the last three years, we’ve learned that identifying a potential CMO is just the beginning of a long arduous process for companies with aspirations to bring bioproducts to market. Although Capacitor’s comprehensive directory was a useful catalog of CMOs, companies still faced several hurdles in actually getting to a production agreement. 

There are so many places where connections between CMOs and bioproduct companies can go sideways. Cold outreach to CMOs is plagued with unanswered calls or emails, NDAs take months to sign, and there is always potential for miscommunications in the tech transfer process. Even after all that effort, there is no guarantee that a particular CMO makes technical or financial sense. 

This process repeats with each CMO negotiation. Sequential conversations are often inefficient, and parallel discussions become cumbersome. Before you know it, your search has stretched on for a year, and you still haven’t found the right fit, wasting limited financial and people resources in the meantime. 

So Match combines Synonym’s deep expertise in biological process commercialization and contract manufacturing with the up-to-date CMO data to help companies discover their best-fit manufacturing set-up.

How does Match work?

Match is able to leverage Capacitor, Synonym’s proprietary CMO database. Capacitor includes more than 280 facilities in over 40 countries, with more than 125 unique unit operations for 80M+ liters available worldwide. Our dataset includes key details such as tank quantity and capacities, manufacturing grades, certifications, product expertise, and DSP unit operations.  Synonym is continuously growing and refining this dataset, so our customers can benefit from the most up to date information available.

Match makes finding a CMO easy. We provide templates to gather an overview of your process. From there, we leverage Capacitor and our Synonym Production Network – a unique group of vetted CMOs – to assess facilities from all over the world, ranging from tolling CMOs to non-traditional sites that have available capacity. We then identify the most promising production options and share a shortlist. After narrowing the scope and charting your pathway to production, Synonym collects quotes on your behalf. 

Companies get all of this after filling out just one Synonym template, sparing you countless email threads and duplicative document exchanges. We’ll coordinate the request for quotation process and deliberate with CMOs to answer their questions as we compile your options.

Synonym puts MNDAs in place to protect confidential information. We compile a report with standardized quotes so you can make the optimal business decision. Finally, we guide you through the proposals and facilitate introductions to the right CMOs. This typically takes just six to eight weeks.
